Spider Veins
Spider veins appear as small red, blue or purple threads running beneath the skin. Also known as telangiectasias or small reticular veins, spider veins rarely present a medical problem to the patient. Their treatment is usually an elective cosmetic procedure.
We treat spider veins using a method called sclerotherapy, which involves injecting the small vein with a liquid that occludes the vessel. After the procedure, blood can no longer pass through the affected vein, and the vessel simply disappears, absorbed by the body.
Sclerotherapy treatment takes just a few minutes and is performed in our office. Patients can walk immediately following the procedure, and generally resume normal activities right away.
It is important to realize that even after successful treatment, the body often continues to produce new spider veins. Most patients return periodically for follow-up treatments.
