Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat small veins, such as spider veins. The vein is injected with a liquid called a “sclerosant” that occludes the vessel, blocking the passage of blood. After the procedure, the vein no longer functions and is simply absorbed by the body.

Because spider veins are visible at the skin’s surface, sclerotherapy injections are usually guided by the naked eye. Occasionally ultrasound may be used to help guide injections for veins deeper in the leg.
