Risk Factors

Fit
Any of the following factors may increase your risk of developing varicose veins:

Age
As you get older, veins tend to get progressively worse. Most varicose veins appear between the ages of 30 and 70.

Gender
Women develop varicose veins more frequently than men. A number of factors contribute to this disparity, including hormonal influences, pregnancy and menopause.

Genetics
If any of your family members have varicose veins, you have a greater chance of developing them as well.

Obesity
Carrying excess weight increases pressure in your legs and veins.

Occupation
Varicose veins are more common among people who stand for prolonged periods of time.

Leg Trauma
Trauma such as sports injuries may impact your risk.

Medical History
Those with a history of edema, lyphedema or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are more likely to develop varicose veins.
